Mesogio ( Greek Μεσόγειο ( n. Sg. )) Is a village in the center of the Greek island of Samos . It also forms the local community of the same name Mesogio (Τοπική Κοινότητα Μεσογείου) in the municipality of Pythagorio .

location

The village is located on the south side of the Ambelos Mountains , to the west a little below the Pandroso at an altitude of about 580 meters. The local community Mesogio (Τοπική Κοινότητα Μεσογείου) borders in the north on the local communities Ambelos and Vourliotes of the municipality district Vathy , in the east on Pandroso, in the southwest on Pyrgos and in the west on Platanos and Ydroussa of the Karlovasia district .

history

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1677. The residents were known as Arnaouts or Albanians because of their own language . Attica or the Cycladic island of Tinos was accepted as the place of origin . The village was probably founded with the repopulation of Samos in 1562. The residents practiced agriculture and cattle breeding and were known for making wine. Due to the phylloxera disaster in the late 19th century and the loss of livelihoods, many residents were forced to leave the island and emigrate to America, Australia and Europe.

Since 1918 the village formed as Kinotita Kato Arvaniton (Κοινότητα Κάτω Αρβανιτών) an independent rural community. The village was renamed in 1960 by Kato Arvanite (Κάτω Αρβανίται) after Mesogio. With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, it was incorporated into the municipality of Pythagorio . The administrative reform in 2010 brought the former municipalities of the island together to form the newly created municipality of Samos ( Dimos Samou Δήμος Σάμου). Since then, Mesogio has the status of a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα).
