Kokkari ( Greek Κοκκάρι ( n. Sg. )) Is a small tourist town on the north coast of the Greek island of Samos . The city of Samos is almost 10 km southeast, Vourliotes about 4 km west.
Kokkari was founded in the 19th century on the ruins of an older village by settlers from the neighboring village of Mytilinii . Kokkari means “little onion” in German and is a reference to the vegetables of the same name that were grown here in earlier times.
The most important source of income for Kokkari is tourism , which found its way into Kokkari in the early 1990s, followed by the oil power station of the state energy supplier DEI . The fishery , in which a large part of the inhabitants of Kokkari used to work, now only plays a subordinate role.
Near the fishing port is the village's landmark , the "Cavos", a large boulder . Kokkari has a small fishing port and three beaches: the city beach is called "Longbeach" and is located near the Cavos. The second is called "Lemonakia" (Greek: Limonen) and is around 1.5 kilometers west of Kokkari. The third is called "Tsamadou Beach" and is about 3 kilometers from Kokkari in the same direction, a little further away is "Tsambou Beach".
With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, Kokkari was incorporated into the municipality of Vathy . After the merger of the former municipalities of the island after the administrative reform in 2010 to form the municipality of Samos ( Δήμος Σάμου Dímos Sámou ), the correction in 2019 in two municipalities means that the place belongs to the municipality of Anatoliki Samos .
