description
The eastern strawberry tree is an evergreen shrub or small tree that is three to five meters tall. The trunk and branches have a smooth, red-brown bark that peels off in large plates. The ovate to elongated leaves are alternate and are about 5 to 10 cm long. They are dark green on top, slightly gray-green on the underside and finely ciliate on the edge. The flowers appear from February to April in upright panicles about 10 cm long . The single flowers are white and bell-shaped with back-curved tips and about 7 mm long. The berry-like, 5-faced fruits are 8 to 12 mm in size. The spherical fruits are initially green and turn orange-red as they ripen; the pulp is floury in consistency.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
distribution
