The hawfinch weaver ( Ploceus hypoxanthus , syn. Loxia hypoxantha ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).
The Latin additional species comes from ancient Greek ὑπο hypo , German 'under, below' and ancient Greek ξανθός xanthos , German 'yellow' .
The bird is found in Indonesia , Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist or flooded habitats , swamps , also cultivated land, always close to water.
features
The species is 15 cm tall and weighs about 19 g. It is a medium-sized weaver with pronounced sexual dimorphism . The male in the breeding plumage is golden yellow with a black mask including the ear covers and throat. The bill and iris are black. The wing and tail are brownish with strong yellow stripes with delicate light stripes at the tips. The legs are pink. The female is less bright, more orange-yellow. Instead of a mask, it has a dark eye stripe and a wide yellow eye stripe. The beak is gray.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- P. h. chryseus A. O. Hume , 1878 - Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam
- P. h. hypoxanthus ( Sparrman , 1788), nominate form - Sumatra and Java , as an introduced species also in Singapore
voice
The male's song is described as ending chattering and rattling.
Way of life
The food consists mainly of grass seeds , preferably millet and, during the feeding season, also insects .
The breeding season is in July in Myanmar, between July and September in Thailand, in August in Laos and between January and June in Java.
Hawthorn weavers are apparently monogamous and only occasionally polygynous . They breed in small colonies . The nest is built by the male and completed by the female. It hangs low over water or marshland, or significantly higher in bushes and trees. The clutch consists of two eggs that are incubated by the female.
