The Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant ( Persian دارخوین, DMG Dārḫowīn ), also known as the Estehlal nuclear power plant , is a planned nuclear power plant in western Iran , 70 kilometers south of Ahvaz , on the Karun River. There is no reliable information about the number of planned reactors.

Before the Islamic Revolution , in October 1977, Iran had signed a $ 2 billion contract with the French company Framatome , which is now part of the Areva Group, for two 910 MW pressurized water reactors at Darkhovin. Construction work began in January 1979. After the revolution, France withdrew from the project and the technical components of the plant were not delivered to Iran, but used for the Gravelines nuclear power plant . There were also delays during the Iran-Iraq conflict .

In 1992, Iran signed an agreement with China for two 300 MW reactors on the same site, which should be completed within ten years. A technology similar to that of the Chashma nuclear power plant in Pakistan, which is being built by China, was planned.

Under pressure from the United States, China also withdrew from the project.

The project was subsequently continued by Iran itself, as no other country was willing to participate in the construction. A reactor modeled on the 40 MW heavy water research facility currently under construction in Arak was designed (see IR-40 ). The Iranian nuclear reactor is said to have a capacity of 360 MW. The start of construction was announced in 2008, the start of operations is planned for 2016 [out of date] .

The facility will be Iran's first locally designed and built nuclear power plant.
