The Chashma nuclear power plant (after the English name Chas hma Nu clear P ower P lant also abbreviated CHASNUPP ) with four reactor blocks in the province of Punjab is located near the city of Chashma ( Chashma Barrage ) on the left bank of the Indus , 32 km south of Mianwali City , 280 km southwest of Islamabad and 1160 km northeast of Karachi in Pakistan . Blocks 3 and 4 were built with the participation of the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI: Shanghai Institute for Research and Design of Nuclear Technology , subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation , CNNC).

history

Construction of Chashma-1 began on August 1, 1992. The official start of construction of the facility was on August 1, 1993. After the completion of normal construction work in 1996, large facilities such as reactor pressure vessels, turbines, generators, steam generators, etc. were installed in 1996 and 1997. installed and the reactor is filled with fuel for the first time. Before the system was put into operation, Chashma-1 was checked by a pre-OSART mission, consisting of 14 experts in various areas such as operation, maintenance, training, technical support, safety, etc. The reactor was first synchronized with the power grid on June 13, 2000 and went into commercial operation on September 15, 2000. Construction of Chashma-2 began on December 28, 2005 and the block went into commercial operation in May 2011.

The 300 MW nuclear power plant was designed and built by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). The Chinese technology is based on the experience from the Qinshan nuclear power plant .

The site has been thoroughly examined by national and international experts in accordance with international standards. The seismic aspects were investigated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The result was that the site is well suited for the construction of a nuclear power plant.

On May 28 and December 18, 2011, the construction of a third and fourth reactor block began, which, with a gross output of 340 MW and a net output of 315 MW, should have a slightly higher output than the existing units. In 2016 and 2017, the two systems were each synchronized with the power grid and then went into commercial operation.

Reactor design

Both reactors are pressurized water reactors with a thermal output of 998.6 MWt, a net electrical output of 300  MWe and a gross electrical output of 325 MWe.
