Laguna Verde ( Spanish Central Nuclear Laguna Verde , abbreviation LVNPP ) is the only Mexican nuclear power plant . It is located in the municipality of Alto Lucero de Gutiérrez Barrios , Veracruz .
The nuclear power plant consists of two GE - BWR 5 BWR, each with 820 type MW of installed capacity. Unit 1 went into operation on July 29, 1990, Unit 2 on April 10, 1995. The nuclear power plant covers approximately 4.6 percent of Mexican electricity consumption in full load operation. The nuclear power plant is operated by the state organization CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad ).
The power plant was built against strong protests from the population, which continued even after commissioning. Reasons for the protests are assumed inadequate security measures and potential environmental damage, which the government did not see as a problem.
In March 2005 there were press reports that the Mexican government ordered the power plant to be shut down, but this is not to be expected in the near future due to the power plant's small age.
In July 2020 the license was extended for another 30 years until 2050
incident
On July 12, 2002, an INES stage 2 incident occurred. When the Laguna-Verde-1 block was started up after inspections and repair of minor leaks in the main steam line, a reactor shutdown occurred. According to the IAEA report, this was due to human error in controlling reactor pressure. During the restoration work and further controls, it was found that the make-up system of the reactor had not been operational for at least a year as a result of inadequate monitoring procedures.
Data of the reactor blocks
The Laguna Verde nuclear power plant has a total of two blocks :
