Keshev - The Center for the Protection of Democracy in Israel is a non-governmental organization based in Jerusalem , Israel . It was founded in 1998 by academics, lawyers and activists under the direction of former journalist Yizhar Be'er, who has served as managing director ever since. In response to the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin , the organization sees it as its task to protect and promote the fundamental democratic values of Israel. Keshev has been running the “Media Monitoring” project since 2004, in which she analyzes Israeli reporting on the Middle East conflict and social minorities. The aim is to sensitize the media and to put a stop to recurring patterns such as prejudice, incitement and delegitimization of the conflicting parties.

David Grossman has been the honorary president of Keshev since 2004 . The chairman is the journalist Danny Rubinstein . Before him, from 2004 to 2007, the linguist and communication scientist Dr. Daniel Dor holds this office. Since its inception, the organization has published more than 40 studies on reporting by Israeli media. Keshev is financed exclusively through donations and is supported by the European Union , USAID and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung , among others .

activities

From 1998 to 2004 Keshev dealt with the analysis of undemocratic groups in Israel. Her investigations and reports addressed, among other things, political pirate broadcasters and Jewish groups calling for violence or the construction of a third temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. From 2004 onwards, Keshev's “Media Monitoring” project focused on the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians and its media processing. In this context, Keshev examines the news of the three best-selling Israeli newspapers ( Jedi'ot Acharonot , Ma'ariv, and Haaretz ) with particular attention to the implications of their editing. The first study of the new project looked at the media dealing with Yasser Arafat's illness and death. Other reports dealt with reports on the withdrawal from Gaza and the political status of Jerusalem. In 2007 and 2009 studies were also published on the role of women in the Second Lebanon War and on ethnic minorities such as the Ethiopian Jews .

  • Keshev regularly hosts workshops for pupils, students and teachers in Arabic and Hebrew. The participants should be taught the basics of journalistic work and techniques of critical reading.
  • Keshev offers training for journalists to raise their awareness of unbalanced or distorted reporting and to convey alternative methods.
  • Part of Keshev's job is to confront media representatives with their research findings and to point out cases in which reports do not do justice to the complexity of a topic. Attempts are also made in personal conversations to develop alternative formulations and representations.

Cooperation with Palestinian Organizations

As part of "Media Monitoring", Keshev has been cooperating with Palestinian NGOs since 2004, which in turn investigate the reporting of the Palestinian media on the Middle East conflict. Until 2009, Keshev worked with “MIFTAH - The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy” . Together they published research results and teaching material in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Since May 2010, Keshev continued the project together with "IPCC - The International Peace & Cooperation Center" under the name "Press for Peace".
