Ketchers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ketscher is a name from Hamburg for a historical tool for excavating sand in the water.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, ketchers were used to dredge sand by hand from small barges to a depth of 5 feet . On the one hand, the fairway was preserved, i.e. shallows were removed, and ballast material was obtained, which was required for sailing ships . The ketcher was usually a pole on which a kind of bag hung in which the sand could be removed. Since this method of Abbaggerns with the advent of ships with a larger draft was inadequate, the Ketscher disuse came.
