A sprocket is a machine element that is used to transmit power using chains . A sprocket is always coordinated with the chain used. Sprockets for roller chains are usually made much narrower than those for link chains .

In the case of sprockets with fewer than 15 teeth, the smoothness of the drive is reduced, since the interaction of the chain with the individual teeth in small sprockets leads to increasingly small variations in the chain speed, to the oscillation of the chain and finally to vibrations .

Sprockets for link and roller chains are standardized in DIN 8192. They are used for power transmission in roller chains according to ISO 606 (formerly DIN 8187). Sprockets according to this standard can be designed as a sprocket disc ("Form A") or as a sprocket with a hub flush on one side ("Form B") and designed to accommodate single, double or triple roller chains. They are made of steel with a minimum tensile strength of 500 N / mm² or of cast iron. Other materials (e.g. plastic) are possible, but not standardized.

Sprockets for block chains have only half as many teeth as corresponding sprockets for roller chains.

Simple chains that do not revolve quickly often consist of uniform, oval chain links that are offset by 90 ° to each other.

Sprockets for link chains (e.g. anchor chains ) are not standardized. They are offered as disc wheels with trough-shaped mountings for the individual links or with a hub on one or both sides . These chain wheels are used, for example, to catch up anchor chains or to move ship ferries and are also referred to as chain sprockets .
