The Ketterer Spezialfahrzeuge AG was a manufacturer of horse vans and motorhomes based in Karlsruhe .

History and products

The Ketterer company was founded in Karlsbad (Baden) in 1990 in the legal form of a GmbH by Michael and Ulrike Ketterer. With only three employees at the beginning, Ketterer started the production of horse transporters , which were new at that time and which combined space for horse and rider in one vehicle. Between 1995 and 2003, advertising trucks were also manufactured for promotional events and trade fairs. In order to be able to enlarge the living space integrated in the horse transporter, from 2001 onwards the company offered a side extension in a width of 1.2 m for the product lines Ketterer Professional and Ketterer Exclusive , initially on one side, later also on both sides.

The vehicles produced were based on standard truck chassis. For this purpose, Ketterer developed individual equipment that appealed to an upscale market segment.

On February 26, 2008, the company was renamed a stock corporation . In the same year, the production of pure motorhomes began under the name Ketterer Continental . With these, the living space could also be enlarged by means of side extensions. The storage space concept of the vehicles, which are up to twelve meters long, was designed in such a way that other separate rooms could be accommodated in addition to the living area, e.g. B. Garage for a small car, warehouse, fitness room or the like. All models were temperature and noise insulated. The privacy was also protected by a black ribbon window made of tinted safety glass.

In 2010 and 2012, the company was awarded the "caravaning design award: innovations for new mobility", which Messe Düsseldorf awards every two years in cooperation with red dot GmbH & Co. KG.

Corporate structure

The seat of the Ketterer Spezialfahrzeuge AG was Karlsruhe. Around 65 people were employed there in construction, planning and production, with specialists in the areas of design and development, mold construction, metal processing, on-board technology, interior fittings and saddlery. All constructions and layouts were developed by the company itself. Each vehicle was handcrafted as a unique specimen.

In Sweden, Ketterer Spezialfahrzeuge AG was represented by a partner for service and sales.

In 2011, Ketterer Spezialfahrzeuge AG took over Schuler Fahrzeugbau GmbH in Ebhausen . The majority of the shares in Ketterer had been owned by Zuiderhoofd BV from Wim de Pundert since 2013, who also has a majority stake in the Knaus Tabbert Group . On March 18, 2014, Ketterer Spezialfahrzeug AG filed for bankruptcy.

The remaining assets including the naming rights were bought in December 2014 by the Belgian company Stephex STX. The Karlsruhe production site was closed. The Stephex Group has been producing horse transporters in Hungary for the Ketterer brand since spring 2015. Ketterer Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH in Ebhausen takes over sales and marketing.

The Schuler subsidiary was not affected by the bankruptcy and continues to operate as an independent company in Ebhausen.
