Kevin Phillips (publicist)
Kevin Price Phillips (born November 30, 1940 ) is an American publicist and commentator on politics, business and history.
Kevin Phillips was a political advisor to the Republican Party , particularly Richard Nixon's campaign advisor in the 1968 presidential election . In this context he is considered to be one of the most important people who represented and spread the idea of the Southern Strategy . He formulated this political strategy in a book The Emerging Republican Majority . He advocated the thesis that the Republican Party could win the conservative voters in the south of the USA with a race policy and thus win the presidential elections. In 1970 he said in an interview with the New York Times Magazine
All the talk about Republicans making inroads into the Negro vote is persiflage. Even 'Jake the Snake' [Senator Jacob Javits of New York] only gets 20 percent. From now on, Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote, and they don't need any more than that ... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened the Voting Rights Act . The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats .
“All that talk about the Republicans having burglaries from negro turnout is a satire. Even 'Jake the Snake' [ New York Senator Jacob Javits ] only gets 20 percent. From now on, Republicans will never get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote, and they don't need more. But Republicans would be short-sighted if they opposed the Voting Rights Act . The more Negroes enroll as Democrats in the South, the faster the anti-black whites will leave Democrats and become Republicans. There are the (voters) votes. Without this pressure from the blacks, the whites will revert to their old comfortable livelihoods with the local Democrats. "
Over the past two decades, however, he turned his back on his former party and became one of its fiercest critics. He writes regularly for the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio .
