The ship type was designed in the mid-1970s as a replacement type for the aging population of comparable tankers in the world merchant fleet. The ships of the series are designed as universally applicable product tankers for long voyages. Based on the designed hull lines, a type of bulk carrier was also developed in the course of the development, which was offered as Key 39 .
The designation Key 40 is based on the Bremen key , with the following 40 standing for the load capacity of around 40,000 tons. The Key 39 type would have had a load capacity of around 39,000 tons, but was not built.
Technical details
The Key 40 ships have superstructures arranged aft and 23 cargo tanks ( Lady Clio , Taifun ) or 21 cargo tanks ( St. Clemens ) with which four types of cargo could be transported simultaneously. Four cargo oil pumps with a capacity of 1000 m³ / h each were installed for cargo handling.
The main engine was a six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine built under license from MAN at AG Weser with an output of 13,800 hp, which acted directly on the fixed propeller. There was no bow thruster available to support the berthing and casting off maneuvers.
