Harding Meyer

Harding Meyer (born January 19, 1928 in Hardingen , Grafschaft Bentheim district ; † December 1, 2018 in Melle ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian and one of the leading figures in ecumenical dialogue in the 20th century.

Life

Harding Meyer studied in Bethel, Marburg , Lausanne , Tübingen and Göttingen from 1947 to 1953 and, after the first theological exam, in Tübingen and Paris . After the Second Theological examination, he was in October 1956. ordained . In 1958 he did his doctorate at the University of Hamburg under Helmut Thielicke with a thesis on Blaise Pascal .

After two years as a study inspector at the Predigerseminar Imbshausen , he was appointed professor for systematic theology at the Lutheran theological faculty in São Leopoldo ( Brazil ) in 1958 . In 1967 he moved to the theological department of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Geneva , where he was responsible for interdenominational dialogues. From 1971 until his retirement in 1993 he was professor at the Institute for Ecumenical Research of the LWF in Strasbourg , 1975–1978 and 1981–1988 also its director.

Meyer gave lectures and guest lectures on ecumenical topics in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. From 1967 to 1993 he was theological adviser to the International Lutheran / Roman Catholic Commission ; He also worked in other ecumenical working groups and institutes. Meyer was co-editor of the first three volumes of the comprehensive ecumenical source work, Documents of Growing Consistency . He received four honorary doctorates , including that of the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bonn . In 2008 he was awarded the Theological Prize of the Salzburg University Weeks for his complete works.

Meyer married Gisela Fausel († 1990), with whom he had two children, in 1960, and Dagmar zur Nedden in 1996.
