Kezia (Bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kezia is the second daughter of Job in the Book of Job in the Old Testament after the temptation of Satan.

etymology

The Hebrew personal name קְצִיעָה kezia is a plant name and translates as "cinnamon blossom". What is meant is the cinnamon cassia . The word still occurs in the Old Testament in Ps 45.9  EU : “All your clothes smell of myrrh, aloe and cassia [= cinnamon blossom].” From this verse it can be concluded that the name Kezia is related to the fragrance of the plant .

Plant names occur frequently in the Old Testament with women, further examples are הֲדַסָּה hǎdassāh , German ' Hadassa ' (myrtle),פְּנִנָּה pəninnāh , German ' Peninna ' (coral) andתָּמָר tāmār , German ' Tamar ' (date palm).

The Septuagint gives the name as κασίαν kasían , the Vulgate as cassia , translated both means "cassia".

Biblical narration

Job has seven sons and three daughters at the beginning ( Hi 1,2  EU ). In the course of the temptation of Job by Satan, they die when the house of his firstborn son collapses over them, in which they are sitting together and eating ( Hi 1.18–19  EU ). God eventually ends temptations, turns Job's fortunes, and restores his wealth. Job also had seven sons and three daughters. The latter are named, they are called Jemima , Kezia and Keren-Happuch . They are called the most beautiful women in the country. She and her brothers inherit Job's property ( Hi 42.15  EU ).
