Khachatur Avetisyan

Khachatur Avetisyan ( Armenian Խաչատուր Ավետիսյան , Xačatur Avetisyan , Khachatoor Avedissian , even Khachatur Avetis (s) ian * 14. April 1926 in Leninakan ; † 27. June 1996 in Yerevan ) was an Armenian composer.

Avetisyan studied composition with Eduard Mirsojan at the Yerevan State Conservatory and won gold and silver medals at the international youth competitions in Berlin (1951) and Moscow (1956). He studied the history of Armenian folk music intensively and became director of the Armenian State Dance Ensemble in 1958 and of the Tatul Altunyan song and dance ensemble in 1968 . In 1978 he founded the Folk Music Department at the Yerevan Conservatory. Avetisyan composed numerous works for the oriental box zither Kanun , including concerts and a toccata for Kanun and instrumental ensemble, but also works such as an oratorio in memory of the victims of the Armenian genocide in 1915.
