Khammam is a city in the Indian state of Telangana .

The city is part of the Khammam district . Khammam had the status of a municipality and has been a municipal corporation since 2012. The city is divided into 11 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 184,210 and that of the metropolitan area is 262,255. Khammam has a gender ratio of 1026 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The literacy rate was 83.73% in 2011. Almost 82% of the population are Hindus , around 16% are Muslims and around 2% belong to another or no religion. 10.0% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure

The city is connected to the major cities of the country by road and rail. National and state highways that run through the city, are National Highway 365A, State Highway 3 and 42. The station of Khammam is located on the way from New Delhi to Chennai .
