Khan Abdul Wali Khan (born January 11, 1917 in Charsadda , † January 26, 2006 in Islamabad ) was a Pakistani politician and leader of the Awami National Party (ANP). He was the son of Badshah Khan .

Life

He spent his school days at Azad Islamia. He was the school's first student and was admitted to the school in 1922. In 1933 he studied at Cambridge , but had to drop out due to eye problems. He began to become politically active as early as 1942, which is why he was imprisoned in 1943 and released a short time later. Wali Khan became a member of the Indian Congress Committee in 1947. He was the Secretary of the Northwest Province (NWFP), which he campaigned to rename to Pakhtunkhwa . He was arrested and jailed again on June 15, 1948, and was imprisoned for five years thereafter. Wali Khan was elected President of the National Awami Party (NAP) in 1968 and was arrested again shortly afterwards. In 1969 he was released again. In 1970 he became a member of the national and provincial assemblies. After avoiding four murder attempts, he was arrested again in 1975 and his NAP party was banned. He was also charged with the murder of Hayat Sherpao . Wali Khan was released from prison in December 1977. Until 1991 Khan was politically active and president of the Awami National Party. He was later a mentor to his party until his death.
