The Talysh Khanate was a state in what is now Azerbaijan , which existed from 1747 to 1826. The capital of the khanate was Lənkəran . The state was located in the southeastern part of Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea . The northern border was formed by the Bolqarchay River and parts of the mouth of the Kura River .

history

When the Safavids fled north during the unrest in Persia in the 1720s, some of them also settled in the Talysh area. The area was conquered by Russia in 1722. When it was returned to Persia under Nadir Shah in 1736 , the Safavide Seyid Abbas became ruler of the Talysh province. When Nadir Shah died in 1747, the khanate became independent.

Seyid Abbas died as early as 1747, and he was followed by his son Qara (also Jamaladdin). He enlarged the army and centralized the state by taking the land from the feudal princes and moving the capital from Astara to Lənkəran. He pursued a policy oriented towards Russia , which bothered the rulers of Persia, especially Hidayat of the Gilan Khanate . In 1768 this Talysh attacked. Against Hidayat, Qara asked Khan Fath Ali of the Quba Khanate for help. This defeated Hidayat together with other khanates, but Talysh became part of the Quba khanate. It was only able to regain its independence in 1789.

In 1794 , Aga Mohammed Khan Qajar from Persia led an expedition to northern Azerbaijan. After Talysh refused to form an alliance with Persia against Russia, it was attacked by Persia in 1795. Since the army could not withstand the attack, Khan Mir Mustafa called the Russian General Gudovich for protection. Catherine II sent troops to protect them, but these were withdrawn by Pavel I after her death in 1796 . It was not until 1802 that Talysh became a Russian protectorate .

As a result of the Russo-Persian War between 1804 and 1813 , Lənkəran was captured by the Persians in 1809. After a brief siege under Pyotr Kotlyarevsky, the city was captured again by the Russians on January 1, 1813 . In the same year, after the conclusion of the Treaty of Gulistan , the khanate became part of the Russian Empire .

After the death of Khan Mir Hasan in 1826, the khanate was dissolved.

economy

After Lənkəran became the capital of the khanate, it developed into an important trading city in the region. Under Khan Qara many craftsmen were called to Lənkəran and the city expanded, so two bazaars were built.

reception

In the 2010s, Azerbaijani historians loyal to the regime increasingly questioned the existence of the Talysh Khanate. The background is a strengthening Talysh autonomy movement in the tradition of the Autonomous Talysh Mugan Republic .
