Kho Liang Ie was born in 1927 to Chinese parents in Magelang on the island of Java , which at that time was part of the Dutch colony of the Dutch East Indies . During the war of independence that led to the establishment of the independent state of Indonesia , Kho Liang Ie left the country and moved to the Netherlands.

There he first studied medicine, but soon dropped out and moved to the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academie , where he studied design and interior architecture. After graduating in 1954, he began working for the Goed Wonen housing association, which was organized as a foundation . From 1957 to 1963 he was editor of the journal of the same name published by the foundation.

From 1958 until his death, Kho Liang Ie worked for the Maastricht furniture manufacturer Artifort. He not only designed furniture for the company, such as the armchairs and sofas of the 416 series, but also advised the manufacturer on a stylistic reorientation and recruited designers such as Pierre Paulin and Geoffrey Harcourt. Kho Liang Ies' other clients include the furniture manufacturer Fristho, the tile manufacturer Mosa and the Brynzeel company, which offers a very diverse range of products from floor coverings, doors and kitchens to crayons and pens.

As an interior designer, Kho Liang Ie was one of the pioneers of open office landscapes. In addition to office space - for example for the Phonogram company in Baarn - he also designed interiors for cultural buildings such as the Cultureel Centrum in Amstelveen or the Lijnbaantheater in Rotterdam. His most important work as an interior designer is the interior design of the central terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which was built between 1963 and 1967. In order to create the clearest possible environment, he attached great importance to undisturbed visual relationships, a bright interior and large windows that allow a direct view of the waiting aircraft. In order to create as uniform an overall picture as possible, he only selected objects that were predominantly gray and brown to furnish the terminal with works of art. Design elements of the facility planned by Kho Liang Ie can still be found in Arrivals Halls 1 and 2 in particular.
