Kian-gwan Kongsi

Kian-gwan Kongsi ( Chin.建 源 公司, Jianyuan Gongsi) was a company in the Dutch East Indies (after 1947 Indonesia ), which was run by the Chinese . It was the first multinational conglomerate in Southeast Asia.

Established by Oei Tjie-sien

Kian-gwan Kongsi was founded in Semarang, Central Java, Dutch East Indies in 1863 by Oei Tjie-sien with a fortune of 3 million guilders .

Kian-gwan Kongsi mainly exported agricultural products such as sugar and fish, and imported tea and silk from China.

Between 1890 and 1903 the company made a total profit of 18 million guilders.

Expansion under Oei Tiong Ham

Under the leadership of Oei Tiong Ham , the son of Oei Tjie-siens , Kian-gwan Kongsi expanded rapidly and became the first multinational conglomerate in Southeast Asia.

Kian-gwan Kongsi had offices in Bangkok , Calcutta , Singapore , Hong Kong , Shanghai , London and New York . The conglomerate also included land and factories in Java , a bank, a broker in London and a fleet registered in Singapore.

One of the sugar factories was one of the first and largest in the world.
