List of apple varieties

Kidds Orange Red , also Kidd's Orange Red , Kidds Orange is a variety of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The variety bred in 1912 by the New Zealand breeder James Hutton Kidd was supposed to combine the taste of the European Cox Orange with the look of the American Red Delicious . The flavor is reminiscent of Cox Orange, but is larger and easier to grow in a sunny climate. It is still popular as a cultivar in the 21st century. However, Kidds Orange Red achieved particular importance as the direct ancestor of Gala .

The apple has an intense and complex aroma that is reminiscent of flowers, among other things. He's cuter than Cox. The yellowish flesh is dense and sufficiently juicy. It is medium in size, slightly conical and has recognizable ribs. The base is narrower than the top. Often it is slightly asymmetrical and when placed on a flat surface it slopes to one side. The basic color is pale yellow with a light covering of light red. It has some darker spots. The quite pronounced russeting gives it a marbled appearance.

In order to reach full ripeness, the apple needs a lot of sun in autumn. In Europe it is harvested in October and stays in cold storage until January. The trees grow vigorously, but only bear mediocre. The apple is susceptible to fruit tree cancer , but resistant to powdery mildew and apple scab . In cool summer weather, Kidds Orange Red quickly sheds leaves.

Kidd's Orange Red was the first New Zealand-bred apple to be grown commercially there on a large scale. Kidds Orange Red was tested in Jork in the 1960s for commercial cultivation in Germany, but could not prevail.
