Josh Raskin

Josh Raskin (* 1980 in Toronto ) is a Canadian film director and animator . As a musician, he performs under the name Kids & Explosions .

Life

Raskin studied New Media at Ryerson University in Toronto from 2000 to 2004 . He made a film for the National Film Board of Canada that mixed texts from propaganda films from the 1940s with new footage. The film caught the attention of Jerry Levithan (* 1954), who contacted Raskin. Levithan had conducted an audio interview with John Lennon as a teenager in 1969 ; now he commissioned Raskin to visualize the sound. Raskin, animator James Braithwaite, and computer graphic artist Alex Kurina worked on the film for about a year, with Raskin creating, directing and producing the animation script. The short film I Met the Walrus had its festival premiere on June 14, 2007 at the Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto. Raskin was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film for the film in 2008 .

According to his own statement, the work on I Met the Walrus Raskin did not want to make any more films for the time being. Raskin had already played guitar during his studies with the band Music for Mapmakers. Now he devoted himself again to music, worked as a DJ and released his debut album Shit Computer with collage-like mashups under the name Kids & Explosions in 2010 .

At the same time, Raskin worked in the video and advertising sector and in 2012 published the 1.5-minute long commercial Introducing Google Input Tools , which he had created on behalf of Google . In the spot he combined various animation techniques, including hand animation, computer animation and stop-motion animation.
