VICE is an ad-financed and originally Canadian lifestyle and youth magazine . The online and print magazine, which is now based in New York , has several branches in various countries. The publisher is Vice Media. The German edition has been published since August 2005, the Austrian and Swiss edition since 2007.

Today VICE also stands for the global media company and in-house video productions that resulted from it .

Content and concept

The magazine deals mainly with contemporary youth culture , including controversial topics such as sex , drugs and violence as well as important social problems or political conflicts across national borders .

In 2013, VICE achieved a media coup when it accompanied former basketball player Dennis Rodman to a meeting with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang . In August 2014, VICE became the first news outlet to show a report on the Islamic State .

The magazine was founded in 1994 in Montreal, Canada by three then unemployed friends Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith and Gavin McInnes . It started out as a fanzine for subcultures under the name Voice of Montreal and was initially funded by the government as part of a project aimed at creating jobs and job opportunities. In 1996 the editors wanted to become independent of their original editor, Alix Laurent. They bought the rights from him and renamed the magazine VICE . In order to improve ad sales to streetwear companies , the main editorial office moved to New York in 2002.

In 2009, VICE founded the online Creators Project together with Intel to promote and disseminate creative ideas and innovations. At the end of 2013, VICE News started with around 100 reporters and editors in 35 offices around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Mexico City, São Paulo, Los Angeles, Istanbul, Moscow, Beijing and Kabul. In 2013, VICE documentaries began broadcasting on the US commercial broadcaster HBO . In 2015, the collaboration with HBO was extended for another four years. VICE documentaries were shown in German-speaking countries on ZDF , SRF and RTL II . VICE also entered into media collaborations with CNN , MTV , Spiegel Online and Zeit Online, among others . The TV broadcaster Viceland started in 2016. With VICE Records ( music label ), VICE Film ( film production company ), Virtue ( marketing and design agency ), Advice Network (advertising network) and VICE Books ( publisher ), the company is now active in other media areas.

In 2012, Vice Media had annual sales of approximately $ 175 million and the company was valued at $ 1.4 billion. The magazine was distributed in 27 countries with a total circulation of 1.1 million. In 2013 Rupert Murdoch invested 70 million dollars (around 52 million euros) in VICE through 21st Century Fox , and in 2014 the investment company TCV and the US commercial broadcaster A&E Network each invested 250 million dollars. In 2014, annual sales were $ 500 million and the company was valued at $ 2.5 billion. In 2017, the company was valued at $ 5.7 billion following the entry of TPG Capital . The majority of the company's stake is held by the original publishers.

At the end of 2017, research by The New York Times revealed that more than 20 women were alleged to have been victims or witnesses of sexual assault on the editorial staff of Vice .

Due to economic difficulties, Vice Media left around 250 employees in spring 2019, around 10 percent of the workforce. In October 2019, Vice Media took over Refinery29, an online portal for young women.

The German editorial team started in Berlin in 2005 with five employees and grew to 140 employees by 2015. Benjamin Ruth was the founder of the German edition and has been managing director and publisher since then. The editor-in-chief of the German edition was Cambridge graduate Tom Littlewood from 2008 to 2018 . Laura Himmelreich was editor-in-chief of the German online edition from 2016 and editor-in-chief of all German-language editions from 2018. In 2019 she was replaced by Felix Dachsel . In 2014, the editorial staff was 28 years old on average, half of them are female. In 2015, the circulation was 100,000 copies. In addition to Bild , Spiegel Online and Sky, Vice Germany has been producing content for Snapchat Discover since April 2017 .

In August 2018 it was announced that the entire eight-person team in the Austrian editorial team had decided to leave the company. Planned restructuring was given as the reason. Since then, the three German-speaking country offices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland have been coordinated centrally. In the course of the 2020 economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the company introduced short-time working for three months from June 2020 .
