In 2012, her social report Eine Reise ohne Rückerkehr was nominated for the German Reporter Award in the category Best Reportage and in 2013 was awarded the Hansel Mieth Prize . The man's joke , a portrait of Rainer Brüderle in Stern, sparked a nationwide debate about sexism and sexual harassment of women.

On June 1, 2016, Himmelreich switched to the German online edition of the lifestyle and youth magazine Vice as editor-in-chief . In September 2018 she became editor-in-chief of all German-language editions. The Austrian editorial team criticized the structural change and closed the company. In 2017, Himmelreich, together with Hans-Martin Tillack and Ulrich Neumann, was nominated for the Nannen Prize in the “Investigative Achievement” category for their investigative research on precarious working conditions at the Rossmann drugstore chain , which appeared in 2016 under the title Rossmanns Tagelöhner im Stern .

In 2017, the jury of the medium magazine Himmelreich voted third place in the category “Editor-in-Chief of the Year 2017”.

Feature "Der Herrenwitz"

In the portrait of the Lord joke in the constellation of 24 January 2013, it described a lewd remark of the FDP -Spitzenkandidaten on the evening of Epiphany meeting of the FDP on January 6, 2012. Thus did Brüderle seen in a hotel bar on her bosom and said, "You can use a Also fill out a dirndl . ”In addition to this incident, Himmelreich draws the image of a man in“ permanent erosion ”with descriptions of other situations, who uses slipperiness because of her popularity.

Sexism debate

Reinforced by the debate on Twitter under the hashtag #aufschrei about sexist remarks and attacks that women are exposed to in their everyday lives, the sexism debate has also become a dominant topic in print media and television programs such as the talk shows Markus Lanz , Maybrit Illner and Günther Jauch as well as in the international press and "spilled over into the USA". The Süddeutsche Zeitung found that Laura Himmelreich had played a key role in initiating the sexism debate with her Stern article about Rainer Brüderle.

Reactions of the FDP

FDP board member Wolfgang Kubicki accused Laura Himmelreich of a journalistic "breaking a taboo" because she had made the "protected area" of confidential background discussions public. The FDP politician Koch-Mehrin welcomed the fact that Himmelreich had the courage to “openly name the subject of personalities” in her article. Federal Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (FDP) evaluated Brüderle's statement as a compliment at the beginning of February 2013: “A compliment is different than when someone is actually abusive.” - “If I can also wear a dirndl and that suits me where is there the insult? So I really want to leave the church in the village. ”Brüderle himself initially did not comment on the allegations. At the ZDF summer interview in 2013 he said in this context: "There are issues that you don't have to comment on". It was only in April 2014 that he spoke up publicly and stated that the comment had been made in the presence of numerous other journalists, none of whom, including Himmelreich himself, had complained. Rather, Himmelreich accompanied him on several appointments even after the incident: “She drove with me in the car. Nobody does that who feels harassed. She hasn't complained to me for a year. "()

Reactions in the press

Khuê Pham pointed out in Die Zeit that Himmelreich never used the term “sexual harassment” itself.

Anja Maier commented in the Taz that Himmelreich “of all people, the victim of Brüderle's sexism, is becoming the perpetrator for her critics”. The news magazine Focus , the left-wing political weekly newspaper Jungle World and the tabloid Bild reported in February 2013 that Himmelreich wrote in an article in Stern about Ilse Aigner “eight months after her barbeque meeting” : “She has remained down-to-earth and is suitable for dirndl she anyway. "

Previous attacks by politicians

In response to Himmelreich's report, several journalists said that they themselves had experienced verbal and physical attacks by politicians and, in some cases, had kept them to themselves for years. In the Berliner Morgenpost , Inga Griese described how she felt disconcerted and defenseless when Willy Brandt put his hand on her knee during a background conversation in the early 1990s , but on the other hand emphasized that she said Hans-Dietrich Genscher's sentence “I knew I already liked how your lipstick color tastes "unproblematic and " giggled a lot " at an event in the early 1980s sitting next to Uwe Barschel . The NDR correspondent Gesine Enwaldt reported on a conversation with Brüderle, in which “from his side it was only about picking up”, which she found “extremely unpleasant” and later suppressed. Hanni Hüsch said that she had experienced verbal abuse by Brüderle in her time as a Berlin correspondent in the years 1998-2005 and said that the reputation preceded him "that it is not compulsively proper to be alone in a room with him" . Panorama reporter Patricia Schlesinger described how an FDP politician put her hand on her knee at the end of a shooting session without being asked while the camera team was still packing up.
