cry out

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

#aufschrei (read: hashtag outcry ) is a hashtag that was used in early 2013 on the microblogging service Twitter to post messages about sexist experiences. Together with an article published at the same time about an encounter between journalist Laura Himmelreich and FDP politician Rainer Brüderle , which was described as abusive , the tweets sparked a debate about sexism (especially everyday sexism ) in the German public .

Developing the Debate

On January 24, 2013, the Illustrierte Stern published an article by journalist Laura Himmelreich about the top candidate of the FDP for the 2013 federal election, Rainer Brüderle, whom she accused of sexually abusive behavior towards her. The announcement of this article on January 23, 2013 marked the beginning of a sexism debate in Germany. This was preceded by an article by Annett Meiritz, who appeared in Spiegel and discussed misogyny in the Pirate Party .

After the Twitter user Nicole von Horst tweeted her own experiences, the feminist Anne Wizorek and other young women on Twitter established the hashtag #aufschrei on January 24, 2013 , which triggered an avalanche of tweets about comments and assaults that women are exposed to in their everyday lives and that they find sexist. From January 21 to 27, 2013, the hashtag reached over 57,000 Twitter messages, but not all of them supported the initiator's cause. The sexism debate was then also a topic in print media and television programs such as the talk shows Markus Lanz , Maybrit Illner and Günther Jauch as well as in the international press and "spilled over into the USA". For example, the New York Times reported on the events and commented on them in several articles.

The term sexism was not used consistently in the ensuing debate; it has also become a search for binding rules. The journalist Birgit Kelle criticized in a column and a book, both under the title " Then do the blouse ", that the evaluation of male behavior as hot flirtation or as sexism also depends on personal sensitivities and thus degenerates into arbitrariness. If it was not Rainer Brüderle but George Clooney who had exchanged the same words with Laura Himmelreich, the conversation might have got a “whole new twist”. The topic of "sexism among (or towards) men" also plays a role in the discussion, and power relations are also discussed critically. The journalist Margarita Tsomou criticized in the magazine analyze & kritik that the discourse had so far left out the social conditions towards homosexual, bisexual and transsexual people and intersectional reinforcements, for example among “non-white women”. Several prominent participants in the debate, such as Anke Domscheit-Berg and Wolfgang Gründinger , called for a discussion on “new gender models”. A year later, after the campaign started, Wizorek called for a modern male image in an interview. In September 2014 Anne Wizorek worked on the outcry campaign in a book, which is a kind of “brief guide to feminism for those with an affinity for the Internet”.

"Virtuous fury"

At the beginning of March 2013, Federal President Joachim Gauck commented on the affair in an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel with the words: "When there is such a virtue of furor , I am less moral than one might expect from me as a former pastor." He continued that there is definitely still a lot to do on the women's issue. "But I cannot see a particularly serious, widespread maladministration by men towards women in this country." An open letter was then published on the platform alltagssexismus.de , in which Gauck was asked to share the stories that were posted under the hashtag #aufschrei there as well as being read on Twitter. The signatories of the appeal also protested against the word "Tugendfuror". It is used “like 'hysteria' in a pejorative way, to ridicule the anger of women and to downgrade it as overemotionality. In doing so, you are serving centuries-old stereotypes about women - stereotypes that maintain sexist structures and stand in the way of gender equality , ”the text says.

Gauck's press spokeswoman said that the Federal President generally does not answer open letters, but that he will deal with gender equality during his term in office. Gauck later tried to defuse the conflict and declared on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8th that there was “still disadvantage, including discrimination and everyday sexism”. He welcomed it when "women and men alike - lead an engaging and serious debate about this".

A blogger wished Gauck “to have to walk through German cities for three months as a young woman at night” and Christiane Jörges commented in her column on his attitude with the remark that he had become “recognizable” through the talk of the virtuous fury - “as an old man and man of the old ”.

Grimme Online Award

On June 21, 2013 #aufschrei received the Grimme Online Award in the “Special” category. In its justification, the jury emphasized that no discussion previously initiated in a social medium had received such a broad echo in traditional media and in politics. The hashtag showed the importance of social media for the social debate on virulent topics. At the same time, the jury expressed their hope for a new, “interlinked online and offline debate culture”. The winners are all “hashtag users who have constructively discussed the problem of existing everyday sexism”.

Swiss outcry

In October 2016 there was a public debate about sexism and sexual violence in Switzerland . Unknown initiators started the discussion on Twitter under the hashtag #SchweizerAufschrei . The trigger was the interview statement by the national councilor and former police officer Andrea Geissbühler (SVP), according to which naive women were complicit in a rape . On Twitter, women and men responded with descriptions of sexual harassment in everyday life. Within a few days, over 1000 tweets were published under the hashtag. There were also women politicians who reported sexism in the Bundestag building. On a website, the initiators also try to stimulate public discussion by allowing everyone to write on a kind of blog.
