Anne Wizorek (2019)

Anne Wizorek (born May 5, 1981 in Rüdersdorf near Berlin ) is a German feminist who became known in 2013 through her tweets #aufschrei (pronounced: "Hashtag Aufschrei") and the resulting debate about sexism (especially everyday sexism ).

Life

Anne Wizorek is the daughter of a mechanical engineer and grew up in Rüdersdorf near Berlin . She studied Modern German Literature and General and Comparative Literature at the Free University of Berlin and Scandinavian Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin , but did not graduate.

Feminist work

Wizorek has been active on Twitter since 2008 under the @marthadear account . From 2013 to 2018 she ran the blog kleindrei , which she edited together with Juliane Leopold .

On the night of January 24th to 25th, 2013, she and other feminists used the hashtag #aufschrei to collect and make visible experiences with sexism and sexual violence against women. The hashtag campaign is often wrongly understood as a reaction to the article “ Der Herrenwitz ” by journalist Laura Himmelreich , which appeared in Stern on the same day . According to Wizorek, however, this is a coincidence , which in turn drove the media debate about everyday sexism.

In addition to enthusiasm, the campaign also aroused criticism. Among other things, Federal President Joachim Gauck described the debate as " virtuous fury ". For this he was criticized by Wizorek and other activists in an open letter.

After the sexual assaults on New Year's Eve 2015/16 , she used the new hashtag # Without exception against sexism and racism. In this context, she said, referring to a taz article, that there was an unreported number of 200 at the Oktoberfest in addition to the ten rapes reported annually . These crimes are "primarily" committed by "white organic Germans", but are excused and played down. For this she was criticized by the media and experts. Rainer Samietz from the police station for combating sexual offenses in the Munich police force and Maike Bublitz from the women's emergency number denied this figure. In October 2016, the police published that two of the 18 perpetrators identified for the total of 31 reported sexual crimes (including one rape) in connection with the Oktoberfest 2016 were German citizens. The author of the original taz article from 2009 was then forced to explain the estimate of the 200 cases in the dark field in detail.

From 2015 to 2017 she was a member of the Expert Commission for the Federal Government's Second Gender Equality Report . In 2015 she was the ambassador of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency in the theme year against gender discrimination.

Awards

On June 21, 2013 #aufschrei was the first hashtag to receive the Grimme Online Award in the “Special” category.

Book publication and controversy

In October 2014, Wizorek published the book Because an outcry is not enough. For a feminism of today. The book sparked controversy in the media. Wizorek urged her followers on Twitter to give her book positive reviews on Amazon and to rate critical reviews for which she blamed masculists as unhelpful.
