history

Since the 18th century, Kidsgrove grew with the coal mining industry , which has since been shut down. Cloug Hall Mansion was a local theme park in the city that is now destroyed. The modern Kidsgrove is a commuter town whose house prices rose sharply in the first decade of the 21st century. Many people now work in the bigger cities like Manchester or Birmingham . The engineer James Brindley built the first Harecastle tunnel for the Trent-Mersey Canal near the city; Thomas Telford built the second. Kidsgrove also marks the southern end of the Macclesfield Canal . There is a legend about a headless ghost that is said to haunt the Harecastle Tunnel. The ghost is said to be that of a young woman who was murdered in the tunnel. It is called the Kidsgrove Boggart .

Kidsgrove was made an urban borough in 1904, with the abolition of the Wolstanton rural district, including the parishes of Kidsgrove and Newchapel. Talke , previously part of Audley Borough, was added in 1932.

Kidsgrove is home to Kidsgrove Railway Station, opened as Harecastle by the North Staffordshire Railroad on October 9, 1848 , and later renamed Kidsgrove Central . This station is still a hub, albeit now under the name Kidsgrove . However, there were two other stops on the closed loop line , namely Kidsgrove Liverpool Road, opened November 15, 1875 and Market Street Halt, opened July 1, 1909.

The city has a library, post office, health center, bank and supermarket. There are smaller shops, restaurants and snack bars in Marktstrasse.
