The pine weevil ( Pissodes castaneus , Syn .: Pissodes notatus Fabricius , 1787 ), also called the small pine weevil , is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae). It is with him a forest pest , the preferred four to twelve year old pine trees ( Pinus ) attacks.

Pine weevils live around two to three years. A generation period is one year, but the generation relationships are confusing, as the beetle continually creates new broods throughout the entire vegetation period.

The original distribution area of the pine weevil includes Central and Northern Europe. He was also abducted to North America in the 20th century .
Damage caused
The females of the Kiefernkulturrussler gnaw holes for oviposition where the bark is smooth and not too thick. The branch bases of the lower branch whorls are preferred. The female lays two to three eggs in the months from April to September. Within four weeks, these eggs develop into larvae that are light yellow in color and have a light brown head. The larvae migrate in the bast of the tree down the trunk to the roots. About five months after hatching, the larvae penetrate the sapwood , where they pupate in a cave. The young beetles leave their pupa chambers and their host trees through round hideouts.
The damage that both the beetles and the larvae cause by eating their bark is primarily a disruption of the flow of sap in the trees. As a result, branches and shoots wither.
