history
The namesake John Kiehl opened a pharmacy in Manhattan on Third Avenue in the area between Union Square and what is now known as the "East Village" . Kiehl mainly produced homeopathic medicines . In 1921 the pharmacy was bought by an employee, the pharmacist Irving Morse. Morse began developing cosmetic products, specializing in facial care.
His son Aaron Morse took over the business in the 1960s and developed Kiehl's into a global manufacturer. He died in 1995. He was followed by his daughter, Jami Morse Heidegger. It expanded further and in April 2000 sold the company to the French cosmetics group L'Oréal , which now has Kiehl's as one of its numerous brands .
