Kienlesberg Bridge

The Kienlesbergbrücke is a steel bridge in Ulm , Baden-Württemberg . The 270 meter long bridge was built as part of the new line 2 of the Ulm tram and put into operation in 2018. Following the next running, listed Neutorbrücke the bridge was built in Tudor style. The steel box girder of the longitudinal girder is given the statically necessary structural height through the mixture of half-timbering and Vierendeel girders.

location

The bridge is located in Ulm district center and crosses the northern end of the Ulmer main railway station , including the new Wendlingen-Ulm , the Filstal- and the Brenz Railway . The northern abutment is located on the slope of the eponymous Kienlesberg.

use

In scheduled traffic, the bridge is only used by trains on tram line 2, while buses can also be used during disruption and diversion operations. There is a service route on the southern side of the bridge, but it is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

particularities

Following the commissioning of the new Wendlingen – Ulm line, rail operations will take place at this point on four levels.

The width of the bridge varies, so that the sidewalk has bulges at individual points, from which pedestrians can take a look over the railway systems. Benches are built into the half-timbered structures.

The bridge is illuminated indirectly at night. This lighting, the view of the Ulm Minster and the special architectural language of the bridge itself and the neighboring Neutor Bridge make the Kienlesberg Bridge a popular motif.

The bridge designed by the London office Knight Architects is regarded by the Lord Mayor of Ulm and numerous other local politicians as the “most beautiful tram bridge in Ulm, Germany, Europe and the whole world”.
