Kilkerran Castle

Kilkerran Castle is a ruined castle in Campbeltown in Scotland administrative unit Argyll and Bute .

history

King James IV had a donjon built in 1490 to accommodate a garrison to suppress the MacDonald clan .

King James V commissioned further fortification work during a trip to the islands in 1536 against the MacDonalds and other rebellious clans.

When the king sailed from Kilkerran (now Campbeltown), Alexander MacDonald, 5th of Dunnyveg , took Kilkerran Castle by force and had the governor of the castle hang from the walls in front of the king. As a result, Alexander MacDonald was ordered to Stirling , where he died in 1538.

today

The castle ruins are now integrated into a garden wall and Historic Scotland has listed them together with the adjoining farm as a Category C historic building.
