history

In 1873 and 1875, from acquired Campbeltown originating James Macalister Hall of Tangy and Killean the estate of Killean. A fire broke out during the renovation of the old mansion and the building was largely destroyed. The Scottish architect John Burnet was responsible for the first construction plans of the new Killean House from 1876 , which he revised in the following years. His son, John James Burnet , then directed construction, which was completed in the early 1880s. After Macalister Hall's death, the property fell to his brother Stuart in 1904 . In 1907 the south wing extending at right angles to the south of the main building was added. Since Stuart also had no direct descendants, his nephew Hamish Hall inherited Killean House. After Hamish's childless widow died, the property was eventually sold.

description

In contrast to many other Scottish mansions from this period, Killean House is not constructed symmetrically. Architecturally, it shows borrowings and features of various architectural styles, including from the French, English and Scottish late Gothic and the early Renaissance . From the two to three-story main building there is a one to two-story wing at the rear, creating an L-shaped building plan. Another flat wing to the south of the main building was added later. The masonry consists of hewn ashlar. The crenellated, projecting entrance tower closes with a slate-covered hip roof . It is located in the northeast of the facility. To the right of this, the building closes with a semicircular corner tower with a conical roof and three hipped dormer windows, to which the single-storey rear wing connects. It has a simple, detached decorative ribbon above the ground floor.
