Bildstein Sövestad 1

The image of stone Sövestad (No. DR 290;. Sövestadstenen 1 , also Krageholmstenen ) is a boulder of granite from the Viking period (around 960 to 1050). It was found in 1756 on the grounds of Krageholm Castle in Krageholm near Sövestad in the province of Skåne in Sweden .

Serpentine rune stone Sövestad 2

The stone is about 1.65 meters high and shows a man in a long robe carrying a Greek cross on a staff . The person could be a clergyman ( bishop ?), Then the illustration would be one of the oldest in Scandinavia, which is a testimony to Christianization . The remains of a sword were found under the stone that lay overturned on the picture side .

The stone does not belong to the Gotland picture stones and not to the mask stones . The picture stone in the Hørdum Kirke in Denmark shows a comparable representation, albeit with a pagan content ( Thor's fish haul ) .

The Sövestad rune stone (DR 291), a typical Swedish serpentine ribbon stone, was found nearby . Picture stones are more common in this region than in the rest of Sweden ( Hunnestad Monument ).
