Kilncraigs Mills

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kilncraigs Mill , also Kilncraigs Factory , is a former company in the Scottish town of Alloa in the Council Area Clackmannanshire . Today only two buildings of the formerly extensive mill remain. In 1972, both the main building and the storage building immediately to the south were included in the Scottish monument lists and finally upgraded to the highest category A in 2004.

history

The wool mill has been in operation at this location since 1814 and gradually expanded over the decades. At times it was the largest wool mill in the United Kingdom . The earliest industrial buildings were a two-story, elongated mill with adjoining warehouse and date from around 1830. Around 1850, the West Mill was built on the site and the facility was then expanded in 1859 to include the East Mill and in 1868 the North Mill . Towards the end of the 1870s, the original mill was demolished and replaced by a contemporary building. The architect William Kerr was commissioned to design a new administration building, which was built in 1903. In 1920 the company merged with one of its biggest competitors to form Patison & Baldwin . In 1936 a new warehouse was finally added. Towards the end of the 20th century it became part of the Coats Viyella concern and was finally closed in 1999. In the 2000s, most of the buildings were demolished in order to build a supermarket. The former main building was modernized in 2004 and reopened as an office building. The Scottish Minister Andy Kerr chaired the ceremony.

The building is located southeast of the city center of Alloa and formed the north-western end of the company premises. It is adjacent to a cemetery and is not far from the historic Tower House Alloa Tower . It has features of English neo-baroque architecture. The four-story, elongated structure runs in a north-south direction. The windows are arranged on 13 vertical axes along the long side. At ground level, the windows on axes 4–11 close with segment arches. On the first and second floors, the windows protrude on the second axis and are decorated with blind pillars . The surrounding windows are all twin windows. On the street side on the north facade, the windows are arranged on three axes. On the first floor of the central one, a twin window with a semicircular window above is installed. These are flanked by pillars with lion figures. Two doors lead into the building from this side. The building ends with hip roofs that are covered with gray slate.
