Kilrea ( Irish : Cill Ria; German: "Gray Church") is a small town (English village ) in northeast Ireland in the historic county of Londonderry in Northern Ireland .

History and present

Kilrea is located in the far east of County Londonderry near the border with County Antrim , in a strategic position above the Bann . It belongs administratively to the District of Causeway Coast and Glens and parliamentarily to the constituency of East Derry .

The earliest settlement can be traced back to the 4th century. According to legend, St Patrick visited the area around Kilrea in the 5th century . From the beginning of the 17th century, the place grew significantly in the course of the Plantation of Ulster . Seven people were killed in Kilrea during the Northern Ireland conflict.

Today Kilrea is a smaller market town and the economic center for the surrounding area. At the 2001 Census there were 1,513 people in Kilrea, of whom 69.3% were Catholic and 29.8% were Protestant. In the 2011 census, the population of Kilreas was 1679 people.

Transport links

The A54 road runs through Kilrea and runs from Coleraine (about 25 kilometers north) to Magherafelt (about 28 kilometers south). The B75 road connects the city with Maghera (about 15 kilometers southwest); the road B64 leads east. Ballymena (about 20 kilometers southeast) can be reached via it .

Culture

The Kilrea Pipe Band has been in existence since 1921, taking part in events and competitions throughout Ireland and Scotland, as well as the annual Festival of the Fairy Thorn in Kilrea in summer , which is celebrated beyond parish boundaries .
