Kilsheelan ( Irish Cill Síoláin , also Cill tSíoláin , "Síoláns Church") is a small town in the extreme south of County Tipperary , on the border with County Waterford , in the south of the Republic of Ireland . At the 2016 census , Kilsheelan had 812 residents, with the population increasing by almost 60% since 2006. The area was already settled in the Neolithic , as excavations in 2006 showed. The place is on the north bank of the River Suir between the towns of Clonmel in the west and Carrick-on-Suir in the east.

  • In the cemetery are the ruins of the eponymous church, which was mentioned in a document as early as 1260. It has been rebuilt several times over the years. The late Romanesque entrance is particularly worth seeing.
  • At the entrance to the village is a motte built by the Normans in the 12th or 13th century . In the 20th century, a Marian grotto was created on it.
  • A bridge built between 1830 and 1870 (according to other sources 1820) crosses the Suir in the immediate vicinity of the Motte.

The railway line from Waterford to Limerick leads past Kilsheelan. However, the station, which opened in 1853, was closed to passenger traffic in 1963 and to goods traffic in 1976. The nearest train stations are now in Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel.

The state bus route Bus Éireann maintains connections to Dublin , Cork , Waterford and Limerick , among others .

The private bus operator JJ Kavanagh also offers connections via Kilsheelan.

Trivia

In 1975 and 1979, Kilsheelan was the overall winner of the Irish Tidy Towns competition.
