Kilwi (Baden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kilwi or Kilbi is called the festival of the parish fair in some areas of southern Baden , especially in the Black Forest . It begins every year on the third weekend of October in the night of Sunday and ends on the following Tuesday.

Customs

In the area of the upper Breg tals ( Furtwangen and Vöhrenbach ), as well as in the adjacent municipalities, is ushered in the night from Saturday to Sunday by a large fire from kindling and wood of the beginning of the Kilwi. These fires are usually set up by larger groups or families in the previous week and lit when it gets dark. The 2 to 10 m large fires often burn late into the night. Traditionally, Kilwiküchle , thin sheets of dough, are baked and usually eaten during the fire and on the following days.

On Kilwi evening, groups of children also wander around the houses singing, for which they receive money and sweets. They sing the song:

dialect translation
Hit isch Kilwi, tomorrow n'isch Kilwi
until the Zischdig Owä,
if i zue dä Elisabeth kumm [gang],
no say i guädtä n'Owä.
Guädtä n'Owä Elisabeth,
tell me
where the bed is.
[Hindterm Ofe on the wall,
Kiächli bache isch no shame!]
Today is Kilwi, tomorrow is Kilwi
until Tuesday evening,
when I come to Elisabeth,
then I say “Good evening”.
Good evening Elisabeth,
tell me
where your bed is.
[Behind the stove on the wall,
baking cakes is no shame!]

Young people between the ages of 12 and 16 often play pranks at night. So z. B. from 10 p.m. doorbells stuck with tape or cars, garden fences etc. wrapped with toilet paper or other jokes are carried out.

Emergence

The Kilwi fires have a very similar history to the North German potato fires . In order to extract wood from the forest on the most suitable day, the annoying sticks and kindling had to be removed first. This usually happened around the church fair . The scraps of wood were then burned on large fires, which gave rise to the custom. In the Furtwang city chronicle from 2004, another variant of development is described.
