Kim Insuk (born January 1, 1963 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kim Insuk was born on January 1, 1963 in Seoul . Since her first publication Season of Losses (상실 의 계절) at the age of twenty, Kim has gone through several phases of development as a writer. A desire for freedom and purity accompanied by an aversion to principles characterized her early works.

Although this early work is viewed as sensitive and thoughtful, it met with little response in the political and moral climate of the turbulent 1980s. Far from wanting to teach through her works, the young author received severe criticism for having removed herself from the worst needs of the general public and ignored the cause of the workers' and democratic movement.

In the late 1980s she began to publish a series of works that demonstrated a clear change in her choice of topics, ranging from individual freedom and personal desires to social problems and reforms. This change in Kim's literary focus, however, is not a reluctant response to external criticism, nor is it a passive acceptance of literary fashion; rather, it shows the efforts of an author who is constantly concerned with self-reflection, transformation and renewal.

In the late 1990s, her work underwent another metamorphosis. The central characters are no longer on the battlefield of life, instead they are now self-recognized nobody without role models or hopes, who crowd into the shadows in the background of society and lead a meaningless and quiet life.

Looking for new ideas, Kim lived in Dalian , China, from 2002 to 2004 .
