Kim Nam-jo (born September 26, 1927 in Taegu ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Kim Nam-jo was born in Taegu on September 26, 1927 (the exact date seems to be uncertain as references to both September 25 and 26 are the dates of birth) . She attended a girls' school in Kyushu, Japan, and graduated in Korean from the Seoul National University College of Education in 1951 . You still debuted during her studies in 1950, when she's poems constellation (성수 (星宿)) and afterimage (잔상殘像) () published in the "Yonhap Sinmun".

Kim taught at Masan High School and Ehwa Girls High School . In 1954 she received her professorship at Sookmyung Women's University . She works as the chairman of the Korean Poets Association and is currently a member of the Korean Academy of Arts. Her first collection of poems Leben (목숨) was published in 1953 and she has received various awards and prizes over the course of her career.

Kim is a prolific writer who has published over thirty volumes of poetry. The richness of her poetry is based on the dynamic use of sensual language and vivid imagery to portray the subtlety of human emotions. Like her two predecessors Moh Youn Sook and No Ch'ŏn-myŏng , Kim plays an important role in the history of Korean poetry written by women.

The poems in her first collection of poems, Life, show both an affirmation of humanity and a passion for the dynamics of life. These poems represent a harmonious balance between Catholic piety and a passionate, human voice. The poems of her second and third anthologies, The Pleasures of Naads (나 아드 의 향유) and Tree and Wind (나무 와 바람) emphasize more religious beliefs and largely focus on exploring Christian humanism and ethics. Her later poems discard the passion for domination and perseverance as part of religious self-contemplation. In her anthology Meer im Winter (겨울 바다) she describes, thanks to her brilliant poetic imagination, a world in which human emotions have attained absolute purity.
