Kim Young-ha (born November 11, 1968 in Hwach'ŏn , Kangwon-do ) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Kim Young-ha grew up as the son of a South Korean officer on the border with North Korea . Due to carbon monoxide poisoning , he suffered a memory loss in the first ten years of his life. He later studied business administration at Yonsei University. During his time at the university, however, he devoted himself more to traditional Korean music than his studies and was actively involved in the student movement.

In February 1995, he made his debut in the quarterly Kyegan with Reflections on the Mirror . In the following year he received the "Literature Prize for New Authors from Munhakdongne Publishing" for his novel Der Sterbehelfer .

His book Dein Baum was awarded the "Prize for Contemporary Literature" in 1998. In 2004 he received the " Hwang Sun won Literature Prize" for Treasure Island and the "Yisan Literature Prize" for Big Brother is back . His novel Black Flower was honored with the " Tongin Literature Prize".

As an originally apolitical author of novels and short stories, he later devoted himself to more historical topics in his works. Kim first worked as a lecturer at the Korean National University's Drama School and host of a radio show on literature. In 2008 he quit his job to devote himself entirely to writing. He currently lives in New York, where he is visiting professor at Columbia University.

Three films are based on his works. There is also a musical adaptation of one of his works.
