Eleni Theocharous

Eleni Theocharous ( Greek Ελένη Θεοχάρους , born June 24, 1953 in Amiantos , Limassol ) is a Cypriot politician . She was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019 and an observer from October 6 to November 30, 2003.

Life

Theocharous studied medicine and philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki of Thessaloniki . In 1991 she taught as a university professor for pediatric medicine at the Democritus University of Thrace . From 1992 to 2001 she was a doctor in Nicosia at Makarios III Hospital. active. From 2001 to 2009 Theocharous was a member of the House of Representatives for the Dimokratikos Synagermos party . Theocharous entered the European Parliament in 2009 . In addition to her work as a doctor, university professor and politician, she published several poems and short stories as an author in various literary magazines, for which she received several awards. Theocharous is married to Louis Kariolou and has one child.

Theocharous was in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) until March 2016 . Then she moved to the European Conservatives and Reformists Group .

She is Deputy Chairwoman of the delegation in the Parliamentary Committee Cariforum-EU. She is a member of the Development Committee and the delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. She is a deputy in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, in the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and in the delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.

Political party

Theocharous belonged to the Dimokratikos Synagermos (DISY). In November 2015 she left the party after it supported a federal solution to the Cyprus question .

On January 15, 2016, Theocharous founded the Kinima Allilengyi (solidarity movement) party. In March 2016, the Evropaiko Komma joined the KA. In the 2016 election to the House of Representatives , KA received 5.2% of the vote and 3 seats.

In November 2018, the Albanian government accused her of making racist statements and inciting hatred in Albania, whereupon she was declared a persona non grata .
