The Real Monasterio de la Encarnación.

The Real Monasterio de la Encarnación is a monastery of the Augustinian order in Madrid . It was made by Margaret of Austria , wife of King Philip III. , and mainly took in women from the upper classes. The Real Monasterio de la Encarnación belongs to the Patrimonio Nacional and is open to the public. It houses important Spanish cultural assets.

The monastery was built next to the Real Alcázar de Madrid , which was located on the site of today's Royal Palace in Madrid, and had direct access for the royal family. The monastery complex was designed by the architect and monk Alberto de la Madre de Dios in the Herrera style and was built from white and black granite between 1611 and 1616. The monastery was consecrated on July 2, 1616. It was artistically richly decorated, including altarpieces and frescoes by painters who worked at the court, such as Vicente Carducho and Juan van der Hamen y León . The painting of the high altar , which shows the Annunciation , comes from Carducho . The monastery now houses paintings and sculptures with works by Luca Giordano , Juan van der Hamen y León, Pedro de Mena y Medrano , Gregorio Fernández and José de Mora. The beauty of the monastery has often been praised. For example by Cassiano dal Pozzo , who particularly admired the view into the galleries. His employer, Cardinal Francesco Barberini , visited the monastery nine times during his stay in Madrid. In the 18th century there was a redesign as a result of which altars were repositioned and new frescoes were painted by Francisco Bayeu .

The monastery has been open to the public since 1965, which at the same time enabled more research into art history and thus led to new insights into the work of Juan van der Hamens. In the recent past, the paintings in the monastery have been restored.

Very well known is the blood liquefaction miracle of the Holy. Blood relic associated with Pantaleon on the eve of July 27th, which is counted among the tourist highlights of Madrid and attracts thousands of visitors to the monastery every year.
