Pedro de Mena y Medrano
Pedro de Mena , and Pedro de Mena (* around 1628 in Granada , † 13. October 1688 in Málaga ) one was Spanish sculptor of the Baroque .
Mena y Medrano, whose exact date of birth is unknown, but whose baptismal certificate is dated August 20, 1628, completed training as a sculptor with Alonso Cano , head of the Sevillian sculpture school , in the mid-1650s . From 1658 he worked in the Spanish city of Málaga, where in four years he created 40 wooden reliefs on the choir stalls of the cathedral ( Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación ), which are perceived as very realistic and at the same time characterized by deep religiousness. Other well-known works by Mena y Medrano are a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi from 1663, which can be seen in the Cathedral of Toledo , and Saint Mary Magdalene in the Museo Nacional de Excultura in Valladolid .
