Kirby Stone Four

The Kirby Stone Four were an American vocal ensemble that was popular in the 1950s and early 1960s.

The singer Kirby Stone (born April 27, 1918 in New York - † July 13, 1981) founded the group in the years after the Second World War with Eddie Hall, Mike Gardner and Larry Forster and began to perform with her in the New York area. They first appeared on local television stations, then finally on the Ed Sullivan Show and initially received a recording contract with the small label Cadence Records , where their single S S S S 'Wonderful / Raven and a first LP appeared; In 1958 they switched to the Columbia Records label . Several long-playing records followed; their version of the song Baubles, Bangles and Beads became a hit hit in the United States in 1958, peaking at # 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song was also nominated for the Grammy Awards . Following the success of the single, the album hit # 13 on the Billboard 200 . It mainly contained show pieces, pop and jazz standards such as In the Good Old Summertime , George Gershwin's Bidin 'My Time or Whispering by Vincent Rose .

The orchestra of Jimmy Carroll , the Kai Winding Quartet, Alvino Rey , Shelly Manne and Al Klink worked as accompanying musicians for the recordings of the Kirby Stone Four . In their ensemble style they mixed swing , vocalese and early rock & roll , which was then known as "The Go Sound" . Until the mid-1960s, they also made guest appearances on television shows such as the Judy Garland Show . After that, her style went out of style. In 1966 they recorded another rock and roll album with The Tokens under the gray group name United States Double Quartet . During this time, Stone directed various television shows.
