history

The parish of Ilijaš has only one church, the Church of St. Prophet Elias in the city center. The church was built from 1879 to 1881. The church was built from stone. After the Treaty of Dayton 1995, which ended the Bosnian War (1992-1995), the city belonged to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina . During the war the Bosniaks were expelled. However, the community took in Serbian refugees from Sarajevo . In 1996, when the Muslims returned to the city, the church was ravaged and set on fire on the eve of Vidovdan . The church had previously been forcibly entered. The majority of the Serbian population fled the city to Banja Luka after the war . Today the Bosniaks make up the absolute majority of the population.

The parish had three buildings before the 1992 war. The Sveti Sava House served as the first school and was built in 1875. The rectory was built in 1925. Another rectory was built in 1935 and was first used as a school for a few years before the priest moved there. In 1959 the second rectory was expropriated by the state of the parish and used as a warehouse. It was not until 1985 that the church was able to get the building back by court order, from then on it served as an apartment for the second priest. All of these buildings were set on fire with the church in 1996. The church has now been renovated again.

In 2010 the church was attacked and devastated by strangers on the night of December 11th to 12th, and the Interreligious Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina harshly condemned this vandalism . Also in December 2011 the church was devastated again, especially the icons were desecrated.
