Church of Our Lady in Novi Sad

The Church of Our Lady ( Serbian Црква имена Маријиног Crkva imena Marijinog ) is a Roman Catholic Church in Novi Sad in Serbia . It is consecrated to Our Lady of the Holy Name .

history

The first Roman Catholic church in Novi Sad was built in 1742 as a small, simple church building. This was destroyed in the revolutionary years of 1848. The renovated church did not please the Catholic citizens, mainly Danube Swabians , which is why they started an initiative for a new church that should do justice to Novi Sad as a free royal city. In 1891, the construction of a new church began according to the plans of the architect Georg Molnar, which lasted until 1894. The construction management was carried out by Stefan Gusek and Karl Lerer.

The church is 52 m long, 25 m wide and 22 m high. The bell tower has a height of 72 m. There are four altars in the church. The main altar is consecrated to the Virgin Mary, her picture is adorned by the Hungarian kings Stefan and Laszlo. To the left of the main altar is the altar of the Resurrection of Christ with the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul. The third altar is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. The fourth altar is dedicated to the tomb of Christ and is adorned with figures of angels. In 1904 the church was badly damaged by fire, after which it was renovated again.

Others

The church is also called just cathedral , although it belongs to the diocese of Subotica and the local church of St. Theresa of Ávila is the cathedral church of the diocese.
