history

Baptists in Berlin are connected with the later preacher Gottfried Wilhelm Lehmann . Growing up in Berlin, he lived as a young man in East Frisia for a few years . Although brought up Lutheran , he met young committed Christians from the Reformed Church and the Mennonites . Back in Berlin, Lehmann adhered to the pietistic communities of the Bethlehem Church and the Moravian Brethren . He participated in the missionary work by distributing Bibles and tracts . Here Lehman met Johann Gerhard Oncken . In 1834 the Baptist theologian Barnas Sears came to Hamburg to found a congregation of baptized Christians. On April 22nd, 1834 Oncken and six other applicants were baptized in the Elbe and the first Baptist church in Germany was founded. The news of Oncken's baptism and the founding of the congregation of baptized Christians in Hamburg were discussed very critically in Berlin. Lehmann is also unsettled. Only his wife Leonore was convinced of the correctness of the baptism of believers . On May 13, 1837, Gottfried Wilhelm and Leonore Lehmann and four other people were secretly baptized in Rummelsberger See by Oncken, who had traveled from Hamburg. On May 14, 1837, a small crowd gathered around the Lord's table in an apartment at Rosenthalerstrasse 34. The first Baptist church according to the apostolic order was thus founded. On May 31st, the small group was gathered at Stralauer Brücke 5 near Lehmann and proceeded to "constitution" the community, i. H. she gave herself an order.

Building history

The first meeting place for the Berlin congregation was Lehmann's apartment at Blumenstrasse 64, from July 10 to September 1841 the meeting place was at Kreuzgasse, and later at Scharrenstrasse 18. In June 1840, Lehmann was appointed preacher or preacher in London by six English Baptist pastors Ordained pastor. Now he was able to perform the baptisms himself in Berlin. Lehmann collected £ 1200 in England, which was used to buy a piece of land at 17 Schmidstrasse for his own chapel. The resistance from the churches and the city administration was considerable. The Anabaptists were warned in the churches . Since there was no Baptist congregation for the building police in Berlin, it was not them, but only Mr. Lehmann that was accepted as the owner in the building plan . In 1847 the construction of a chapel began on the property at Schmidstrasse 17. On March 26, 1848, the first meeting took place in the new chapel. Due to the result of another collection trip through England, the chapel could be lavishly expanded and equipped with a baptismal font. Julius Köbner gave the sermon in the first service on November 10, 1861 . From April 1884 Eduard Scheve was a preacher in the Berlin community. As the community grew rapidly, it was divided in 1887. In the eastern part of the city, a bar at Koppenstrasse 35 was rented on November 22nd. On October 9, 1887, a new chapel was inaugurated at 11 Gubener Strasse. Both community groups constitutionally remained a legal community. On July 4, 1890, the corporation decided to demolish the old chapel in Schmidstrasse and build a new chapel and a house on the property. The inauguration took place on November 15, 1891. On February 3, 1945, the chapel in Schmidstrasse was destroyed in an air raid. The community from Schmidstrasse temporarily used the Christ Church of the Evangelical Community . From 1960 the Evangelical Free Church Community Berlin-Tempelhof is located at Tempelhofer Damm 133-137.

Legal

It was not until the royal patent of March 1847 that everyone was allowed to leave the regional church. Furthermore, civil marriage was introduced so that Baptists no longer had to marry in the regional church. The German Revolution of 1848/1849 brought the right to freedom of assembly and religion .

On June 28, 1879, the Berlin Baptist Congregation received corporate status on the basis of the law of July 7, 1875 . Lehmann died on February 19, 1882. The funeral will take place on February 24th in the old Luisenstadt cemetery. On January 17, 1894, the “Statute of the Congregation of Baptized Christians (Baptists) in Berlin” becomes valid. According to this, there is only one legal community with property rights in Berlin. In addition, each community group forms a so-called "Kultusgemeinde" (cultural community) with its own board that manages all internal affairs independently. The Evangelical Free Church Community Berlin-Tempelhof is the legal successor to the Baptist community on Schmidstrasse. She is a member of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches .
