The Church of the icon of the Mother of God "Alleviate my suffering" ( Russian Храм в честь иконы Божией Матери "Утоли моя печали" ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the city of Saratov in Russia . The church was built from 1904 to 1906 in the city center near the house of the Bishop of Saratov and Wolsk.

history

From consecration to return to the church

The church of the icon of the Mother of God "Alleviate my suffering" was commissioned by the then Bishop Hermogenes. The construction of the church designed by Pyotr Mitrofanowitsch Sybin began in 1903 or 1904. It was completed just two years later in 1906.

On January 28, 1930, the church was closed by decision of the Soviet regional administration. However, in contrast to most other churches in Russia, it has been preserved almost in its original form. On May 23, 1948, the city's planetarium was opened in the church building .

In the 1960s, at the instigation of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the crosses were removed from all churches and chapels in Saratov . Bishop Pimen finally approached the Saratov city council in 1965 to renovate the church of the icon of the Mother of God “Relieve my suffering” at the diocese's expense . However, this was refused because it had been decided to renovate the planetarium itself. Crosses were also placed on the domes again .

Since the 1990s

In 1990 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In the same year, a small chapel was built next door, which was dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh .

In 2004 the renovation of the church began, especially in the interior. After the church found an iconostasis in the old Russian style, it was placed inside instead of the lectern. A side altar was installed from 2005 to 2006 . In addition, the vaulted ceiling was reconstructed and a new baptismal font was installed.

From 2006 to 2008, the external appearance was restored.
