Parliamentary elections in Northern Rhodesia in 1964

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Northern Rhodesia in 1964, now Zambia , were held on January 20 and 21, 1964.

There were two voting rounds for the Legislative Council , a main round voting for the 65 seats and one for the 10 reserved seats. Blacks voted in the first voting round, while whites got the reserved ones. Other ethnicities were allowed to choose which seats to choose. The United National Independence Party won the election by getting 55 seats. Its leader, Kenneth Kaunda , became Prime Minister of Northern Rhodes and led the country to independence on October 24th of the same year. At that point he became president.

The elections of January 1964 concerned the constitution of a Legislative Council before independence. The distribution of seats was set from the outset so that 65 seats were to be distributed among blacks and 10 seats among whites.
